Journal Publication Options
A new, optional feature of the 14th USNCM is the introduction of a separate process for interested authors to publish in the 2025 off-year issue of Proceedings of the Combustion Institute (PROCI) or a special issue of Fire Safety Journal (FSJ). Submission for PROCI or FSJ publication consideration is completely optional and separate from the traditional USNCM conference presentations and (non-peer reviewed) conference papers. The USNCM Publication Committee will facilitate implementation of a pilot for journal publication:

Interested authors of the highest quality conference papers presenting at the 14th USNCM will be selectively invited after the conference to revise and re-submit their manuscripts for consideration for publication in off-year PROCI or FSJ. Final journal paper submissions are due by April 21, 2025. Note that the papers submitted for possible PROCI or FSJ publication in 2025 will be subjected to a separate, rigorous peer-review process consistent with the high-quality publication standards for these journals.

For this pilot, the PROCI-oy issue associated with the USNCM will be limited to approximately 20-25 papers, although the final number of papers to be published depends on the number and quality of the papers submitted. There is no number limitation for accepted publications that may appear in the FSJ special issue associated with the USNCM; however, these papers must be aligned with fire research and appropriate to the FSJ.

To be considered for an invitation to submit to PROCI or FSJ volumes associated with the USNCM, authors must meet eligibility and selection criteria. The eligibility criteria for journal submission invitations are (1) at least one author attended the 14th USNCM, and (2) the corresponding conference paper was presented at the 14th USNCM. In addition, papers strongly aligned with the four specific Emphasized Thematic Topics of the 14th USNCM will be given preference for publication: Alternative Fuels and Sustainability; Advanced Propulsion; Fire and Explosion Safety; Emissions, Aerosols and Environment. Readiness of the work for PROCI or FSJ submission must be demonstrated in the 10-page USNCM conference paper, and the USNCM Publication Committee will conduct an informal review only for the purpose of determining invitations that will be sent out to participating authors to submit their reformatted PROCI or FSJ manuscripts into the Editorial Manager (EM) system portal starting March 27, 2025. Final publication decisions will be made by the relevant Guest Editor, with on-line publication currently planned prior to September 2025.

If you are interested in your final manuscript being reviewed and considered for publication in the special volumes of the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute (PROCI) or the Fire Safety Journal (FSJ), you are asked to indicate your interest in PROCI and/or FSJ publication upon submission of your conference abstract and papers. More information will be provided later on this website.
