Student Travel Awards

NSF Student Travel Award

US Citizens or US permanent residents will be eligible for NSF travel support funding. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has generously provided a grant to support student attendance at the 14th US National Combustion Meeting (USNCM). Student presenters from U.S. institutions will be eligible to apply for travel support after receiving confirmation of acceptance of their abstract. Applicants for the NSF-sponsored student travel support must meet the following eligibility requirements:

 

  • Be a US Citizen or US permanent resident;

  • Be a full-time student at the time of the 14th USNCM;

  • Be a co-author of an accepted abstract AND be the presenting author;

  • Be a student at a U.S. university farther than at least 30 miles from the meeting site in Boston, Massachusetts.

 

The deadline for applications is March 3, 2025. Please note that the support is restricted to students at domestic US institutions. We anticipate making Awards of several $100s per selected student. To apply for NSF student travel support, please complete the Google form and submit a letter from your faculty advisor stating that you are a full-time student who will give an oral presentation at the 14th USNCM. Faculty letters should be sent to ci_finance@combustioninstitute.org.

 

The amount of support will be determined based upon the number of applicants and recipients.

 

US Sections of The Combustion Institute (USSCI)

The US Sections (USSCI) will provide support for student members of ESSCI, CSSCI and WSSCI who will be making oral presentations at the 14th US National Combustion Meeting (USNCM) and who are ineligible for NSF travel support. The anticipated level of support is up to $340 per student, depending on the number of qualifying students. To apply for USSCI student travel support, please complete the Google form by March 3, 2025.

 

The requirements for receiving a USSCI travel award are:

  • Membership in one of the local US sections (ESSCI, CSSCI, or WSSCI)

  • Ineligible for NSF travel support

  • Oral presentation of a conference paper

  • Confirmed advisor attendance

  • Registration as a student at your home institution

  • Non-local (travel distance > 30 miles)

 

The USSCI and NSF travel support will be separate from any support that you may receive from your local regional sections of The Combustion Institute (ESSCI, CSSCI or WSSCI).

Other travel support from the regional US Sections of The Combustion Institute will also be made available (please see below for details). Please also check with your Section (ESSCI, CSSCI and WSSCI) websites for any additional information concerning separate section student travel funding availability for the 14th USNCM.

 

Eastern States Section (ESSCI)

The Eastern States Section of The Combustion Institute (ESSCI) is pleased to provide financial travel support to students from ESSCI institutions who will be delivering oral presentations at the 14th U.S. National Combustion Meeting to be held in Boston, MA beginning March 16, 2025 and concluding March 19, 2025.  The anticipated level of support is up to $150 per award, not to exceed actual travel expenses after accounting for other travel support.

 

Qualified students must be a current degree candidate at a university from the ESSCI at the time of the conference, must travel more than 30 miles, and must be accompanied by a senior co-worker or advisor, who is a co-author on the presentation and at the meeting. In addition, students must be delivering an oral presentation: students who are only co-authors on an oral presentation or delivering a poster presentation are not eligible for support.

 

To apply for ESSCI student travel support, please send the following information to Prof. Brandon Rotavera, Treasurer of the Eastern States Section of The Combustion Institute, via email (rotavera@uga.edu) as soon as possible but no later than February 21, 2025 in order to determine the final budget. No exceptions will be made if the requested information is not submitted by the deadline.

  • Name of Senior Co-Worker/Advisor in Attendance (must be co-author on presentation)

  • Name of University

  • Email Address and Email Address of Senior Co-Worker/Advisor

  • Title of Paper

  • Authors of Paper (Complete List)

  • Abstract ID Number (e.g., 2TF-0338)

 

The checks will be distributed at the conference at a convenient time and location that will be communicated ahead of time.  You must be present at that time to receive your support and affirm that the travel support does not exceed actual travel expenses.

Central States Section (CSSCI)

Financial travel support is available to student members of the CSSCI who will be delivering oral presentations at the meeting. The anticipated level of support is up to $300 per student, depending on the number of qualifying students.  In order to be eligible a student a) must be enrolled at a school within the Central States Section, b) must be the presenter of a paper at the meeting, and c) must travel from >50 miles to the conference site. The treasurer of the CSSCI will reach out to students from the Central States Section after the meeting. If you have any questions, please contact treasurer@cssci.org.

 

Western States Section (WSSCI)

WSSCI Student Travel Award Application: 

Student travel award applications for the 14th U.S. National Combustion Meeting (USNCM)  provided by the Western States Section of The Combustion Institute (WSSCI) at the The Westin Copley Place in Boston, Massachusetts are now open. The award (In the past ~$400 per student, assuming that sufficient funds are available) applies to students who are presenting at the meeting, must travel greater than 50 miles, and are current members of the Western States Section of The Combustion Institute. Please note: preference may be given to students with oral presentations and financial need, pending total student requests. The deadline for applications is 02/14/25.
